To shore up private teams lacking direct support from manufacturers, Eurosport Events, the organizers of each FIM EWC championship race and Dunlop have jointly created the EWC Dunlop Independent Trophy. A total of €300,000 of prize money will be awarded to teams competing for the EWC Dunlop Independent Trophy during the 2016 FIM EWC season.

Any team using Dunlop tyres that does not have backing from a manufacturer is eligible to participate in the EWC Dunlop Independent Trophy, with sizeable amounts of prize money awarded to the winners of each race.

At the 12 Horas de Portimão, a total of €60,000 will be awarded to the first 20 participating teams past the finish line. This includes a sum of €10,000 for the winner of the EWC Dunlop Independent Trophy at the second round of the 2016 FIM EWC championship in Portugal.

At Le Mans, AM Moto Racing Compétition was the first team to claim top place in the EWC Dunlop Independent Trophy.
