YART Yamaha Official EWC Team started chasing the FIM EWC 2016 title as soon as tests got underway. After topping in free practice, YART consolidated its lead in qualifying to pick up the provisional pole, ahead of Suzuki Endurance Racing Team and GMT94 Yamaha.

Despite the loss of Bradley Smith, who was rushed to hospital after crashing in free practice, YART Yamaha Official EWC Team powered to the lead in the first qualifying at the Oschersleben 8 Hours. Broc Parkes posted the fastest individual time with a 1’26.279 lap, topping his teammate Marvin Fritz’s 1’26.365 lap by a whisker. Suzuki Endurance Racing Team lapped less than a second behind with Vincent Philippe, Anthony Delhalle and Etienne Masson to place ahead of GMT94 Yamaha, Team SRC Kawasaki and F.C.C. TSR Honda. All five teams are in the running for the FIM EWC title, and are well positioned for the start of the Oschersleben 8 Hours at 2pm on Saturday.

The current FIM EWC standings topper Team April Moto Motors Events is only 14th for now. Grégory Fastré suffered a crash, thereby slowing the team’s progress.

Völpker NRT48 Schubert Motors placed 6th even though Dominik Vincon threw in the towel after a crash in qualifying. The BMW-mounted German team is currently topping the Superstock class, and has given itself the edge to snap up the FIM EWC 2016 World Cup. But its main rival Team 3Art Yam’Avenue is close behind in 7th place, and there’s only a one-point gap separating the two teams in the world Superstock standings. The third Superstock team on the provisional grid Yamaha Viltaïs Experiences could also spring a surprise at Oschersleben.

The second stage of qualifying gets underway at 10.30am tomorrow: forecast to be a hot, sunny day in Oschersleben.
